In May 2016 I spent just under three weeks exploring Iceland travelling along Route No1, the ring road, in an anticlockwise direction from Reykjavik. Had I really wanted to I could have driven right round in about seventeen hours, weather permitting, but I decided to take it more leisurely and enjoy exploring out of the way places.

Before 1974 it was not possible to drive all the way round Iceland and crossing the centre is impossible for most of the year and even in summer requires specialist vehicles. Completion of the Skeiðará Bridge in the south finally made circumnavigation possible. The bridge survived only until 1996 when an eruption of the Grímsvötn volcano under the Vatnajökull icecap sent house sized ice boulders careering towards the sea turning the bridge in to mass of tangled steel.

I hope you will be able to join me (please bring family members along as well) on the 19th as I would love to share some of my experiences of the amazing scenery and history of this fascinating island.

Please sign up on the website.

PS There may also be some culinary delights to sample but I promise not to bring any fermented shark along.
