Sea: Porlock Weir, Somerset to Lynemouth - Intermediate (18 Apr 2026)

We very rarely undertake this trip but it is a joy to paddle, given reasonable conditions. It will be high spring tides so the current will be strong and Foreland Point is likely to be bouncy. The ebb tide will carry us west to Lynemouth, perhaps on to Lee Bay for lunch. The flood tide starts at around 14:15 so expect a long action packed and exhilarating day.

The car park at Porlock Weir is at TA24 8PB, OS grid SS 864 478, W3W ///Loved.Good.Condensed.

You must satisfy yourself that this trip is suitable for you, that you are sufficiently experienced, able and willing to paddle at the advertised level. For detailed guidance, see trip categoristion. If in doubt, seek guidance from the advertised leader before registering.

You must register if you intend to come. Places are restricted in an effort to maintain an acceptable leader/participant ratio. When the list is full names can still be registered as reserves and the leader will notify you if you may join the trip.

Sea: West Bay, Bridport, Dorset to Lyme Regis - Improver (25 Apr 2026)

This is a pleasant trip along the Dorset coast but as with many venues it is very weather dependent for Improver standard. Any southerly component to the wind makes launching and landing on exposed shores more tricky, but I'll watch forecasts, report and warn of any potential issues and perhaps change venue.

The currents are weak in Lyme Bay and they are at neaps as well. We should be catching the easterly flow of tide in the morning and the flood (westerly tide) starts at around 12:00.

Let's meet at the car park at 09:30. East Beach Car Park DT6 4EW is at grid SY 463 903, ///W3W.positions.boats.gliding. There is a slippery slipway within the harbour (NE corner) and it's possible to drop boats off there and trolleys can help here. Launching from the beach (S of car park) is also fine although negotiating the large sand bank warms you up.

What is the Start Award?

The Start Award is exactly what it says on the tin, it’s a place to start your paddling journey. If you’re brand new to the sport and really want to learn the basics to get started, then this is the award for you.

What is covered in the Start Award?

Clothing and equipment information, think of it like a crash course in everything you need to physically get yourself on the water, covering all the types of equipment you’ll need
Tips for getting on the water including how to get safely in and out of your canoe or kayak from different places you are likely to paddle
Learn practical skills such as paddling forward, turning and stopping… pretty much everything you need to get started and moving
Staying safe on and off the water, you’ll learn about how to stay safe and make the most out of your paddle session

This is a starter session lasting three hours and will cover a basic introduction to the sport usually in a kayak but canadian canoes are also available if you prefer. We hope that you will find it enjoyable and fun.

This course is aimed at beginners or those restarting canoeing and will be limited to a maximum of 14 people.

Adults and children (age 8 and over) are welcome.

Children under 16 must be accompanied on the water by an adult. We have a Child Protection Policy and code of conduct.

All canoeing equipment will be provided but you will need your own clothing plus a lightweight jacket and old trainers, not crocs. You will get wet so don't wear your best clothes! Make sure you have dry clothes to change into afterwards.

Cost is £20 per person

Full changing and shower facilities are available in the Clubhouse.

The trip from Lulworth Cove to Kimmeridge has dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches and a fossil forest to offer, so not surprising it's a popular venue. There is little current reported for the morning but since it will be spring tides the return trip shows a healthy westerly current

Let's aim to be at Lulworth Cove car park at 09:30hrs which is located at, BH20 5RS, W3W \\\poem.rocket.wager, grid SY820801. It is possible to drive down to the Cove to off-load boats but be prepared for a long reverse back up the hill avoiding pedestrians. Trolleys are normally the best bet.

This course is for people new to paddlesports. It takes trainees to a level that enables them to join a range of Bath Canoe Club trips. It consists of 6 weekday evening river sessions every Tuesday, 6.00 pm until 9.00 pm.

In addition to the course you will also get a full years membership so that you can continue paddling afterwards on club activities.

The course is open to all ages 14 years and over but under 18s must be accompanied on the course by a parent or guardian.

What is the Discover Award?

The Discover Award allows you to develop your decision making and practical skills for a fun and safe time on the water, as you become a more skilled and independent paddler. Through this award you will learn how to choose and effectively use equipment, whilst developing an understanding of the factors which affect your paddling.

Who is it for?

Anyone of any age who want to develop their skills on the water. You don’t need any previous experience to take your Discover Award, just the desire for fun and learning! You can take the award from any craft, from kayaks, canoes, sit-on-tops.

Why should I do the Discover Award?

If you want to develop your skills from your Start Award, or feel like you need to expand your basic paddling knowledge further, this is the award you need. The award covers topics such as:

Encouraging independent decision making on different bodies of water (moving river, canal, estuary, harbour), covering safety and weather aspects too
Preparing for self-guided adventures
Equipment you will need for a variety of paddle trips
Further developing your canoe and kayak paddling and rescue skills

On completion of the course we are able to provide British Canoeing/Paddle UK certification, however this is at an additional cost.

For the river sessions you will be expected to arrive at the clubhouse by 6.00pm in order to be on the water for 6.30pm. We will be off the water by about 8.30pm with a debrief in the clubhouse and finish at 9.00pm.

It is most useful but not essential to do the pool session before any of the river sessions. If you wish to do this course but are unable to come to the scheduled pool session you will be welcome to attend any subsequent pool session(s).

Mumbles offers a sheltered launch and landing with pleasant exposed coastline to paddle along. It will be mid way between spring and neap tides and so there'll be assistance with flood tide starting at 12:40 to help us home. This is a very weather dependant location so we may have to replan.

The location for parking is the Knab Rock car park SA3 4EL, W3W \\\camera.generally.nurses, OS Grid SS 625 876, and there is a slipway which is a short walk and so trolleys would be a good idea but not essential.

Sea: Portloe, S Cornwall w/e - Intermediate (05 Jun 2026)

This will be our first club weekend trip this year and the tides are good for the cornish south coast. I've not targetted a camp site yet but that will come later. My outline plan is for Sat to launch Portscatho heading east to Portloe and the Sun to launch Portloe and venure around Dodman Point. It was an enjoyable stretch of coast when we last visited a couple of years ago.

On Sat the ebb starts at 12:18 and on Sun it's at 13:16.

Our usual plan is to meet at a camp site on the Fri evening, stay Fri and Sat nights. We often head off to a local pub for a drink and perhaps some food as well. I am flexible so if anyone wants to just appear for one day or stay elsewhere that should be fine.

Preparing for self-guided adventures
Equipment you will need for a variety of paddle trips
Further developing your canoe and kayak paddling and rescue skills

On completion of the course we are able to provide British Canoeing/Paddle UK certification, however this is at an additional cost.

The Atlantic N Cornwall coast is usually lively so expect surf launches and landings, and paddling through swell. For this trip you need to be a reasonably strong paddler and confident at rescuing others and being rescued.

Try to arrive Fri evening so that we can confirm trip details. The current paddle plan is to launch from Boscastle on Saturday and paddle north to Crackington Haven and back (ebb starts 12:00). The Sunday trip will be from Crackington Haven to Bude and back.

The target campsite is Trebyla Farm Campsite (SX122,920). We'll probably venture down to the pub in Boscastle on Saturday evening for a meal.

If you change your mind, that's okay! But please contact the leader and the trips officer as soon as you know so that someone else can register in your place.

You must bring suitable equipment or make arrangements for someone to bring it for you (eg. kayak). See what to bring.

You are advised to book a club boat, if you don't have your own. Choose the boat most suited to you and then write the booking on the white board in the club basement store.

What is the Start Award?

What is covered in the Start Award?

Clothing and equipment information, think of it like a crash course in everything you need to physically get yourself on the water, covering all the types of equipment you’ll need
Tips for getting on the water including how to get safely in and out of your canoe or kayak from different places you are likely to paddle
Learn practical skills such as paddling forward, turning and stopping… pretty much everything you need to get started and moving
Staying safe on and off the water, you’ll learn about how to stay safe and make the most out of your paddle session

This course is aimed at beginners or those restarting canoeing and will be limited to a maximum of 14 people.

Adults and children (age 8 and over) are welcome.

Children under 16 must be accompanied on the water by an adult. We have a Child Protection Policy and code of conduct.

Cost is £20 per person

Full changing and shower facilities are available in the Clubhouse.
