Sea: Boscastle, N Cornwall - Intermediate (20 Jun 2026)

The Atlantic N Cornwall coast is usually lively so expect surf launches and landings, and paddling through swell. For this trip you need to be a reasonably strong paddler and confident at rescuing others and being rescued.

Try to arrive Fri evening so that we can confirm trip details. The current paddle plan is to launch from Boscastle on Saturday and paddle north to Crackington Haven and back (ebb starts 12:00). The Sunday trip will be from Crackington Haven to Bude and back.

The target campsite is Trebyla Farm Campsite (SX122,920). We'll probably venture down to the pub in Boscastle on Saturday evening for a meal.

You must satisfy yourself that this trip is suitable for you, that you are sufficiently experienced, able and willing to paddle at the advertised level. For detailed guidance, see trip categoristion. If in doubt, seek guidance from the advertised leader before registering.

You must register if you intend to come. Places are restricted in an effort to maintain an acceptable leader/participant ratio. When the list is full names can still be registered as reserves and the leader will notify you if you may join the trip.

What is the Start Award?

The Start Award is exactly what it says on the tin, it’s a place to start your paddling journey. If you’re brand new to the sport and really want to learn the basics to get started, then this is the award for you.

What is covered in the Start Award?

Clothing and equipment information, think of it like a crash course in everything you need to physically get yourself on the water, covering all the types of equipment you’ll need
Tips for getting on the water including how to get safely in and out of your canoe or kayak from different places you are likely to paddle
Learn practical skills such as paddling forward, turning and stopping… pretty much everything you need to get started and moving
Staying safe on and off the water, you’ll learn about how to stay safe and make the most out of your paddle session

This is a starter session lasting three hours and will cover a basic introduction to the sport usually in a kayak but canadian canoes are also available if you prefer. We hope that you will find it enjoyable and fun.

This course is aimed at beginners or those restarting canoeing and will be limited to a maximum of 14 people.

Adults and children (age 8 and over) are welcome.

Children under 16 must be accompanied on the water by an adult. We have a Child Protection Policy and code of conduct.

All canoeing equipment will be provided but you will need your own clothing plus a lightweight jacket and old trainers, not crocs. You will get wet so don't wear your best clothes! Make sure you have dry clothes to change into afterwards.

Cost is £20 per person

Full changing and shower facilities are available in the Clubhouse.

This course is for people new to paddlesports. It takes trainees to a level that enables them to join a range of Bath Canoe Club trips. It consists of 6 weekday evening river sessions every Thursday, 6.00 pm until 9.00 pm.

In addition to the course you will also get a full years membership so that you can continue paddling afterwards on club activities.

The course is open to all ages 14 years and over but under 18s must be accompanied on the course by a parent or guardian.

What is the Discover Award?

The Discover Award allows you to develop your decision making and practical skills for a fun and safe time on the water, as you become a more skilled and independent paddler. Through this award you will learn how to choose and effectively use equipment, whilst developing an understanding of the factors which affect your paddling.

Who is it for?

Anyone of any age who want to develop their skills on the water. You don’t need any previous experience to take your Discover Award, just the desire for fun and learning! You can take the award from any craft, from kayaks, canoes, sit-on-tops.

Why should I do the Discover Award?

If you want to develop your skills from your Start Award, or feel like you need to expand your basic paddling knowledge further, this is the award you need. The award covers topics such as:

Encouraging independent decision making on different bodies of water (moving river, canal, estuary, harbour), covering safety and weather aspects too
Preparing for self-guided adventures
Equipment you will need for a variety of paddle trips
Further developing your canoe and kayak paddling and rescue skills

On completion of the course we are able to provide British Canoeing/Paddle UK certification, however this is at an additional cost.

What’s next

With your full years membership you can continue paddling afterwards on club activities. You may want to progress on to the Paddle Explore award.

For the river sessions you will be expected to arrive at the clubhouse by 6.00pm in order to be on the water for 6.30pm. We will be off the water by about 8.30pm with a debrief in the clubhouse and finish at 9.00pm.

It is most useful but not essential to do the pool session before any of the river sessions. If you wish to do this course but are unable to come to the scheduled pool session you will be welcome to attend any subsequent pool session(s).

What is the Explore Award?

Your Explore Award gives you ownership; allowing you to choose where you move next in the world of paddle sport.

Working with a coach you will be able to develop a programme that suits what you need. Learning to make confident choices with this individualised approach. This award recognises your ability to independently paddle your chosen craft in a sheltered water environment.

Learn how to choose and effectively use equipment, whilst developing an understanding of the factors which affect your paddling; giving you the confidence to progress to making your own choices with the Explorer Award.

Let's hope the weather is kinder for this week-end away on the S coast of Cornwall. We were last here in 2023 and it was a very pleasant trip.

The chosen campsite is Hall Barton Farm, Pelynt, ///unloaded.vocals.tripled which has a couple of small fields, a few electric pitches, and basic facilities. If you need electric pitch please call Jen 07956006616. There is no reservation fee. Jen has confirmed that the campsite is available and I have booked a pitch already, Fri & Sat nights.

Ringstead is a pleasant launch point for a trip along the white cliffs to Durdle Door and beyond to Lulworth Cove. We've had a good Improvers trip there earlier in the year but Ringstead bay can get bouncy so we may have to relocate.

The plan will be to meet 09:30 at the Ringstead car park, DT2 8NG, OS grid SY751814, W3W ///juicy.whirlpool.remarks. There is a bit of a walk down the path to the pebble beach so trolleys will be helpful.

Sea: Teignmouth, S Devon - Improvers (+) (25 Jul 2026)

Teignmouth to Torbay has some lovely cliff coastline and appears from the sea to be wild and remote because the habitation is well hidden. The coast is also sheltered from the west winds and so it should be possible for Improver level paddlers to enjoy. Some care will need to be taken at launch and landing, hence the Improvers (+), but it should be fine for anyone other than the most hesitant paddler.

Let's meet there at 09:30 and launch soon afterwards before the flood into the estuary builds up. Lower Point Car Park TQ14 8BW is probably the best meeting point.

It's also be a good day out for anyone wanting to visit a lovely sandy beach and then Old Harry rocks. For beginners, my aim will be to do a little teaching and some paddling around to Old Harry and a little way beyond.

Why should I do the Discover Award?

If you want to develop your skills from your Start Award, or feel like you need to expand your basic paddling knowledge further, this is the award you need. The award covers topics such as:

Encouraging independent decision making on different bodies of water (moving river, canal, estuary, harbour), covering safety and weather aspects too
Preparing for self-guided adventures
Equipment you will need for a variety of paddle trips
Further developing your canoe and kayak paddling and rescue skills

On completion of the course we are able to provide British Canoeing/Paddle UK certification, however this is at an additional cost.

What’s next

With your full years membership you can continue paddling afterwards on club activities. You may want to progress on to the Paddle Explore award.

Sea: Kimmeridge, Dorset - Improvers (08 Aug 2026)

The gorgeous Dorset coast is a regular venue for a very good reason. We should be able to avoid most of the holiday makers who focus on Lulworth and Durdle Door and still enjoy the varied cliffs, sandy beach (Mupe Bay) and pock our noses into the cove.

Let's meet at 09:30. Use the car park by the toilet block having dropped your boat by the slipway. BH20 5PE, w3w ///jammy.winners.speedy, OS Grid Ref: SY 910 787. Note that there is a Toll Road to get to the launch site and this is about £12 and includes parking.

You must satisfy yourself that this trip is suitable for you, that you are sufficiently experienced, able and willing to paddle at the advertised level. For detailed guidance, see trip categorisation. If in doubt, seek guidance from the advertised leader before registering.

You must register if you intend to come. Places are restricted in an effort to maintain an acceptable leader/participant ratio. When the list is full you can still register on the waiting list and the leader will then notify you if you may join the trip. That notification may be a few days after registration.

If you change your mind, that's okay! But please contact the leader and the trips officer as soon as you know so that your place can be made available to others.

Paddle Discover Award, Thursday evenings (13 Aug 2026)

In addition to the course you will also get a full years membership so that you can continue paddling afterwards on club activities.

The course is open to all ages 14 years and over but under 18s must be accompanied on the course by a parent or guardian.

SEA: Salcombe - Prawl & Start Pt - Intermediate (15 Aug 2026)

The coast from Salcombe around to Start Point is rugged and exposed but an excellent kayaking area. The launch point can get busy and so early arrival in mid Aug is recommended. Trolleys are helpful although the sandy beach is hard work.

My aim will be to meet at 09:30 and be on the water with minimum of fuss. The meeting place will be Salcombe, North Sands car park TQ8 8LD, What 3 Words ///discusses.gagging.spillage, and OS Maps SX730382.

Sea: Dinas Head, N Pembrokeshire w/e - Intermediate (12 Sep 2026)

Dinas Head is an interesting hill sticking out into St George's Channel close to Fishguard. It's a lovely paddle around this and along the coast.

The Dinas Island Farm campsite is a pleasant place to stay and so is the target base for the weekend.

The outline paddle plan for Saturday will be to paddle around Dinas from the west, then venture further east up the coast to Ceibwr Bay. Sunday will probably launch from Ceibwr Bay and paddle beyond Poppit Sands.
