(NOT bank holidays even if in the calendar)

No need to register or book, just come along.

Pool sessions are good for learning rescues, sculling, rolls and other strokes. The water is clean and warm.

Meet in school carpark 20:15 for 20:30 start. If you arrive later go to the rear of the building at the top of the carpark and open the first door on your right as you come around the corner - that is the pool.

If it's your first time, make yourself known to Martin who runs the session and will probably be wearing a red BCC T-shirt.

Boats, spraydecks and paddles provided. If you wish to bring your own boat please get permission first by emailing Martin mailto:pool@bathcanoeclub.co.uk. You must thoroughly clean your boat inside and out first - no dirt in the pool !

The session is not structured and you are free to practice as you wish. At least one coach will be present (look for the red T-shirts)- but if you want guidance you will need to approach them -don't wait to be asked !

You will need to bring: swim wear and T-shirt to wear in the pool. Googles and nose clip are advisable due to the clhorine. Towel.

Bouyancy aids are not usually worn in the pool or provided, so if you want one you will need to bring one.

Session finishes 22:00, though you can of course leave earlier.

If you are a BCC member these sessions are included in your membership fee, i.e. are free.

For non-members a fee is payable on the evening.

We will be running a progressive programme of white water trip from the 14th of October, on rivers in Devon/Wales. The location will be confirmed closer to the event and will depend on the rain. Too little or too much rain may result in trip being moved to different river or cancelled (some times at short notice).

If it is your first season get on the river in October. Don’t put off your first ww trip until December, when it is -5C, a grade 3+ river is planned and you’re wearing a t-shirt - if you do the trip leader will send you home.
Most white water trips won't have toilets, changing rooms or pubs.

As always we need loads of experienced paddlers/throwlines/cakes and people willing to drive with roof racks to carry boats. If we only have two drivers and they can carry three boats each, the seventh person to turn up won't get to paddle.

Meet at the club to leave by 08.00, as the winter progresses daylight hours are fewer and the trip leaders need to ensure we have a suitable margin of error to get everyone safely off the river before it gets dark. If you tend to spend 10 minutes deciding which paddle to take turn up early. Don't forget it is early and we have neighbours so keep the noise down and nudity only in the clubhouse.

On average most good rivers are about a 1:45 - 2:15 and 100 mile drive. Depending on paddlers energy levels or time spent faffing we may not be home much before 18:00.

Please register if you intend to come. It will log your experience, if car has boat carrying capability and emergency contact details that make it a little easier for the organisers.

What to bring - the usual stuff but not forgetting:
Warm paddling kit as it could be cold?
A cold/hot drink could be a must have - an unbreakable flask or drinks bottle (attached) in the back of your boat.
Food - high energy food is best (flapjacks/Mars bars/banana are good)
Dry warm clothes to get changed into post paddle.

    Getting there:
We share the cost of the fuel (200+ miles, so could be around £30-£50 per car), don't forget to bring cash with you. We'll may also have bridge toll and parking to pay for.

    Organiser Martin pool@bathcanoeclub.co.uk
possibly Jon Humbug if it rains enough.

This is the new award to replace the old 2 star award.

This course is available to anyone who completed the 2 star course last year. There is no charge for this course but you must be a club member. We are running it for 3 reasons.

The first one is to get you all back on the water for the new season

The second is to get you signed off on the new syllabus

The third will be to encourage you to help out on this years courses

Although there is no charge you will still need to sign up so we know who is coming.

    Thanks

    Mark

    Training Officer

    What is the Explore award?

If you want to become independent on the water, go on self-guided adventures and know how to control your craft and stay safe on the water, this is the award for you. If you’ve never been paddling before, it might be worth starting with the Start and Discover awards. In this award you will take ownership of your own decisions and learn to make confidence choices, based on the places you paddle, wind and weather.

    What does it involve?

There’s a strong emphasis on independence with this award, and the Explore award will fill in the gaps of knowledge you might have so you can get out paddling safely on an adventure! The award covers areas like:

    1. On the water etiquette and how to share the space with other water users
    2. Different environments you can paddle (lakes, rivers, canals, estuaries)
    3. Controlling your kayak or canoe safely
    4. Clothing and equipment needs for different environments and weather
    5. Safe exploration

The Paddle Explore Award is an improvement award which supports the development of fundamental paddlesport skills on sheltered water.

It recognises a paddler’s understanding of how the paddle, boat and water interact and their ability to control movement of both canoes and kayaks using fundamental skills.

    Course schedule:

    1. Swimming pool session at Kingswood School to practice capsize drills - each Monday at 8.30 pm.
    2. River sessions every Tuesday, 6.00 pm til 9.00 pm

For the river sessions you will be expected to arrive at the clubhouse by 6.00pm in order to be on the water for 6.30pm. We will be off the water by about 8.30pm with a debrief in the clubhouse and finish at 9.00pm.

The pool sessions will be each Monday during the course to practise capsize and rescue drills. You don't need to attend each week but it is a great chance to practice the skills in warm water.

THERE WILL BE NO PARKING AT THE CLUBHOUSE ON RIVER NIGHTS, PLEASE ARRIVE ON FOOT.

    What is the Start Award?

The Start Award is exactly what it says on the tin, it’s a place to start your paddling journey. If you’re brand new to the sport and really want to learn the basics to get started, then this is the award for you. You’ll cover everything from getting in and out of the boat, what you need to wear and paddling forward.

What is covered in the Start Award?

    1. Clothing and equipment information, think of it like a crash course in everything you need to physically get yourself on the water, covering all the types of equipment you’ll need
    2. Tips for getting on the water including how to get safely in and out of your canoe, kayak or SUP from different places you are likely to paddle
    3. Learn to paddle with practical skills such as paddling forward, turning and stopping… pretty much everything you need to get started and moving
    4. Staying safe on and off the water, you’ll learn about how to stay safe and make the most out of your paddle session

This is a starter session lasting three hours and will cover a basic introduction to the sport usually in a kayak but canadian canoes are also available if you prefer. We hope that you will find it enjoyable and fun.

This course is aimed at beginners or those restarting canoeing and will be limited to a maximum of 12 people.

Adults and children (age 8 and over) are welcome.
Children under 16 must be accompanied on the water by an adult. We have a Child Protection Policy and code of conduct.

All canoeing equipment will be provided but you will need your own clothing plus a lightweight jacket and old trainers, not crocs. You will get wet so don't wear your best clothes! Make sure you have dry clothes to change into afterwards.

    Cost is £20 per person

Full changing and shower facilities are available in the Clubhouse.

THERE IS NO PARKING AT THE CLUBHOUSE, PLEASE ARRIVE ON FOOT.
