2018 - 2 star courses start in April, 1 star courses start in May, details in What's on
Courses for 2018.
For anyone new to paddling we have taster sessions every other Saturday afternoon starting in April. A great way to try out the sport and decide if you want to take it further and sign up for a course.
Our beginners courses start in May and will run on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 6pm-9pm. Just decide which day suits you best. The courses last for 4 weeks and will give you the basic paddling skills and get you to the BCU 1 star award level. The courses are all run by qualified BCU coaches and all the paddling kit is provided. You just need to bring your own personal kit, see What to wear on the water
1 star courses
The introduction courses will consist of a pool session on a Monday evening at the pool at Kingswood School to go through the basic capsize drills in nice warm water. There will then be 4 weekly sessions on the river based from the clubhouse. These will either be on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 6pm til 9pm. At the end of the course there will then be a longer day paddle on the river. This will take paddlers up to the BC 1 star award.
2 star courses
The BC 2 star award courses will take paddlers to the next level of competence and hone the skills learnt on the introductory courses. To gain the award you will need to complete both courses as the award covers both types of craft.
We feel that by offering the courses in this way paddlers can progress at the pace they want to and it can fit round other commitments.
Once you have completed a course you will be able to continue paddling on either a Tuesday or Thursday from the clubhouse with coach led sessions or progress onto one of the other courses.
For the under 16’s course these will run along the same lines but be aimed at younger paddlers. Parents can also come along to these sessions and join in if you want to learn how to paddle together. Under 16’s won’t be able to do the adult sessions. These courses will run in July and August when the water will be a bit warmer.
Have you paddled a canoe before?
Most of our courses are done in kayaks but we also have a fleet of canoes which are great fun to paddle. The 1 star and 2 star courses can also be done in canoes, why not try something different.
Paddled before and want to get back into it?
The best way to get introduced to the club is to come along to one of our taster sessions, have a paddle and have a chat with the coaches.
For evening sessions all Trainees are expected to arrive at the boat house by 6.00 pm in order to be on the water by 6.20 pm. Each training session starts at 6.30 prompt and finishes at about 8.30 pm. There will then be a de-brief upstairs in the refurbished club house with hot drinks and a chance to talk to the coaches to discuss the session.
You do not have to become a member to be able to participate in these courses. If you do become a member at the same time or before signing up for a course, then the cost of the course is reduced by 50%. If you intend to keep on paddling after the course then the cheapest way to do it is to become a member first and then get half price courses.
To participate in club trips we require paddlers to be paddling at 2 star level or above.
